Known for its ability to increase muscle and strength, creatine is one of the most heavily researched supplements on the market today. First mass marketed back in 1992, today creatine is consumed by millions daily.  Creatine is found naturally in the human body and is highly concentrated in muscle. You may wonder why you need to supplement with something your body already makes. As it turns out most people can benefit from supplemental creatine if they want to maximize athletic performance or physical appearance.

Creatine is produced in the body from three amino acids: Glycine, Methionine and Arginine. The natural production process involves the liver and kidneys with most of the creatine ending up in the muscles as creatine phosphate.  Creatine phosphate is used by your muscles to resupply high energy phosphates to regenerate ATP rapidly. ATP is your muscle's energy currency. By resupplying high energy phosphates to turn ADP back into the higher energy ATP you can continue doing high intensity exercise for a slightly longer period of time. When you draw upon your energy stores too quickly or too heavily, as with sprints or explosive weight lifting movements, you have creatine phosphate around to help cover your high energy demands. Creatine phosphate only helps out for a very short period of time, less than 10 seconds. This might not seem like a lot of help, but in fact it is enough to make a slight difference in performance.  Such an advantage might help you win a race or be the difference between average and above average muscle and strength gains.
